Herbert Yutkowitz began whittling with a pocketknife while serving in the U.S. Army during WWII. Over the next three decades he did dozens of carvings, covering a wide variety of subjects, among them animals, nudes, and religious figures. Though he did some work in marble and serpentinite, his preferred medium was wood. He enjoyed the challenge of the grain, and would study each piece, letting the wood's natural curves and characteristics inspire his imagination and guide his hands. This photo gallery, dedicated to his memory, will be updated regularly to feature the full range of his works.
